I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw my son, Jake, sitting on the bus, his face flushed and his eyes darting around nervously. I hadn’t seen him in months, not since he left for college, and here he was, sitting on the bus right next to me.
“Jake? Is that you?” I asked, leaning over to get a better look at him.
He turned to face me, his eyes widening in surprise. “Mom? What are you doing here?”
“I’m on my way home from work,” I replied, smiling at him. “I didn’t know you were back in town.”
“I just got back last night,” he said, his voice trembling slightly. “I was going to call you, but I didn’t want to wake you up.”
